Nelson Mandela was President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was a well-known activist whose passion for social justice earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela Day was proclaimed in 2009, celebrating his birthday (July 18). He passed away in 2013 at the age of 95.

In the spirit of supporting the values that Nelson Mandela embraced, the South Africa team made a generous donation to the South Africa Medical and Educational (SAME) Foundation. SAME is partnering with local organizations to renovate a math classroom at the Diepdale Secondary School, located in Soweto, Gauteng (approximately 30 minutes from Johannesburg).

During the day, employees were also encouraged to spend time volunteering at one of our other local partner organizations focused on youth, literacy and STEM education.

Komatsu believes in contributing to the needs of our communities by building deep, long-term partnerships with organizations to create an even greater impact. Nelson Mandela set the ultimate example of endurance, taking small steps towards the larger leap of positive transformation.
