Today’s new generation Joy loader was designed on the foundation of safety, durability and reliability found in the Joy continuous miner. It leverages several proven continuous miner designs including the Optidrive traction system, latest crawler chain, gathering gearcases and conveyor system technology.
The 14BU27 gathering arm loader, with up to 36 tonnes/minute (39.7 tons/minute) capacity, is designed as a utility machine for use in both production and auxiliary activities allowing great flexibility for your individual mine requirements.
The 14BU27 includes our OptiDrive AC traction system, which is coupled to a compact, all-gear transmission to provide smooth, reliable service. The cutter motor feedback and the traction differential features optimize sump performance even in the most demanding applications. Finally, the brushless AC traction motors are highly reliable and require minimal maintenance.
The 14BU27 features a SmartConveyor package, including our patented dual-sprocket conveyor chain, quiet tail, and hydraulic tensioning system. Pump/tank, bumper, and controller case isolators further reduce noise to provide a safer working environment for your operators.
Increased capacity and faster loading
The 14BU27 includes a 965 mm (38 in.) wide conveyor for maximum loading capacity, improving your overall productivity. The 14BU27 comes with 1500 mm (59 in.) diameter centrifugal loading arms (CLAs) improving productivity by maximizing loading capacity. Optional gathering arm style system is also available.

The 14BU27 uses the same platform as our best-selling 14CM continuous miners, including the following components:

Joy OptiDrive, an AC variable-frequency drive system, integrates software with the electronic and mechanical systems to provide the following features:
- Increased tram speed: significantly increases the tractive effort available, improving the equipment’s ability to climb gradients and negotiate difficult roadway conditions
- Regenerative braking: supplements the mechanical brakes, allowing them to run cooler with extended wear life; regenerative braking is highly effective at automatically maintaining constant speeds when descending gradients
- Less maintenance: no commutator brushes to inspect and replace mean AC traction motors are typically more reliable, more durable, and require less maintenance than DC traction motors

Advanced bolting capabilities
The 14BU27 features an optional bolting rig for auxiliary and center bolting capabilities. The system includes an automated temporary roof support (ATRS) system and a full bolter canopy to protect the bolter operator and create a safer mining environment. The drill is a dry Joy HGX 210 unit with a 500-600 rpm rotation unit that can produce 420 N-m (310ft-lbs) of torque. Its collapsed length is 1080mm (42.5 in) and an extended length of 2184mm (84.5 in).

On-board camera system
An optional on-board camera system improves operator visibility, The system includes two cameras with one camera focused on the gathering head so the operator can watch the left side of the gathering head when he is cleaning the entry. The second camera is mounted on the right side to watch the trailing cable during tramming. A single monitor is mounted inside the cab.
SmartZoneTM proximity detection system
The SmartZone proximity detection system is an integrated training device that helps teach your personnel to operate a loader from safe working zones, as well as stay clear of related danger zones. The SmartZone system tracks, recognizes, and logs operator movements around the machine to provide in-depth analysis for your training initiatives. This option is only available in US and Canada.

The SmartConveyor uses the latest sound abatement technologies to reduce sound output while improving maintainability. Research results have shown a 45% and 65% noise exposure reduction for the operator when compared to a standard machine (Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 7, pp. 83). SmartConveyor combines our patented dual-sprocket conveyor chain and auto-tensioning features to improve the operating environment.
