Christmas is the season for giving and, when we help others in need, we truly experience the joy of Christmas. For the second consecutive year, our Sudbury employees participated in the Adopt-a-Family program through a local women’s shelter, the YWCA Genevra House. The mission of the YWCA is to empower women and their families to reach full potential in body, mind and spirit, through action, advocacy, community collaboration and education. The Adopt-a-Family program helps mothers who have experienced poverty, violence, and/or homelessness within the Sudbury community and are starting a new beginning with their children in a safe environment. Our employees were provided with “wish lists” from two local families and the employee response was overwhelming. Each family received all of their desired items – and more!
The employees also participated in the annual Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive in support of the Sudbury Food Bank. Now in its 30th year, founded by late Vale/Inco employee Edgar Burton whose goal was always to collect “one more can” than the previous year, the food drive has collected more than 1,000 tons of food since it began. More than 100 tons were collected last year alone and distributed to 40 member agencies and outreach groups across Greater Sudbury to help feed more than 16,000 people, more than half of whom are children, according to the food bank.
We’d like to thank all our employees for making this Christmas a little brighter for a few families in need from our community. Merry Christmas!
