August 21 was the day of the 7th Annual Komatsu Mining Corp. Golf Tournament to Benefit Habitat for Humanity, hosted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Representing both surface and underground partners, suppliers came from throughout the United States and Canada to support Habitat’s mission to provide access to safe and affordable housing. While golfers were armed with eclipse glasses in hand, cloudy skies kept the focus on the greens. The day of golf was followed by dinner, a silent and live auction, raffle, and an evening program with awards, and a presentation from Habitat for Humanity.

Komatsu America Corp. President-Americas North and Executive Sponsor of Komatsu Mining Corp.’s Habitat for Humanity efforts Jeff Schmaling shared the philosophy behind the long-standing partnership with Habitat during the evening program. “Investing in organizations that aim to bring a sense of safety and vitality to a community is a priority for us and Habitat for Humanity does just that. When we started our partnership with Habitat our goal was to not only make a difference by helping others achieve the dream of homeownership, but we wanted to see comprehensive change in a neighborhood that is close to our facility. We shared Habitat’s belief that by increasing homeownership in a neighborhood you can have a positive ripple effect on a community.”

Habitat for Humanity Milwaukee Executive Director Brian Sonderman echoed Jeff Schmaling’s sentiment, discussing how Habitat makes an overall difference in the neighborhood. “It’s not just Habitat homeowners who have been impacted by our work. From a 70 percent reduction in vacant lots and blighted properties, to stabilized property values, to improvements at the Washington Park pool, to a 48 percent reduction in crime, thousands of residents of this great neighborhood have seen their quality of life improve because of the neighborhood revitalization strategy of Habitat. We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this without our partnership with Komatsu and the support of suppliers like those here tonight.”

The event is projected to net nearly $85,000, bringing its six-year total to more than $650,000 net raised for Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity. The golf tournament is just one part of the comprehensive commitment Komatsu Mining Corp. has made to Milwaukee Habitat. The partnership also includes a workplace giving campaign and year-round employee volunteer efforts.
